global supply bottlenecks<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18bf4298 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18bf4298\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Corona crisis is often cited as the reason for the worldwide supply bottlenecks. However, this was not the only decisive factor. There are other reasons, which we briefly outline here:<\/p><ol><li><h3>Increased consumption in many countries<\/h3><p>Due to the <strong>economic upswing, <\/strong>consumption is increasing strongly in many formerly poorer countries. Probably the best-known example is China, where an <strong>enormous increase in demand is having an <\/strong>impact on the global economy. But there is also <strong>more and more<\/strong> <strong>demand for consumer goods and machinery <\/strong>from other continents. In the long term, this is changing the flow of goods and supply chains worldwide. In some cases, logistics, transport routes and infrastructure are not yet optimally geared to this.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Management errors in procurement<\/h3><p>Various producers, e.g. in the <strong>automotive industry, <\/strong>reduced their orders for <strong>semiconductors because the <\/strong>demand for automobiles had dropped off in the meantime. When more orders came in again, these components could no longer be purchased to the desired extent because consumer electronics had increasingly bought them up. The consequences were sporadic <strong>production stoppages in the automobile industry <\/strong>due to a lack of components. And this is only one example.<\/p><p>All in all, it can be stated that the approach of <strong>&#8220;just-in-time&#8221; deliveries, which has <\/strong>prevailed for decades and has been optimised over time, <strong>no longer <\/strong>provides a <strong>secure basis for <\/strong>scheduled production in the current situation with worldwide supply bottlenecks. Buyers who had ordered too carefully or too little are now being punished. The extensive avoidance of warehousing, storage costs and capital commitment \u2013 or their partial shifting to the component manufacturers \u2013 is now taking its toll.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Shortage of truck drivers &amp; staff in logistics<\/h3><p>In Germany alone, there is a shortage of about 80,000 <strong>professional drivers <\/strong>and the shortage is becoming <strong>more and more serious<\/strong>. Indeed, it is estimated that about 30,000 drivers retire every year, while only a total of about 15,000 new driving licences are issued. There is also an increasing shortage <strong>of warehouse and loading\/unloading staff, <\/strong>such as forklift drivers. These facts contribute to the fact that the situation in logistics continues to worsen.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Restrictions on production due to Corona<\/h3><p><strong>Factory closures, <\/strong>first in China and later in other parts of the world, had a major <strong>impact on the supply situation worldwide <\/strong>for certain end products and also for intermediate products and components used in mechanical engineering.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Transport problems due to Corona<\/h3><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesschau.de\/wirtschaft\/weltwirtschaft\/china-ningbo-hafen-101.html#:~:text=Wegen%20eines%20Corona%2DFalls%20haben,massive%20Auswirkungen%20auf%20globale%20Lieferketten.&amp;text=Vor%20der%20Einfahrt%20zum%20Hafen,Branchendiensten%20bereits%20rund%2040%20Containerschiffe.\">closure of ports in China <\/a>at the beginning of the pandemic and repeatedly thereafter during new covid cases, as well as <strong>nationwide lockdowns <\/strong>such as in India, led to <strong>enormous transport problems<\/strong>. Goods piled up in the respective ports, some of which could not be unloaded and transported further or loaded and shipped. This resulted in <strong>massive restrictions in production<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Corona-related changes in consumption<\/h3><p>The <strong>demand for laptops, printers<\/strong>, monitors, microphones as well as <strong>consumer electronics increased <\/strong>strongly due to increased <strong>home offices <\/strong>and lockdowns. In contrast, there was initially less demand in the automotive industry, which has changed again over time. These <strong>strong fluctuations in demand <\/strong>pose <strong>major challenges <\/strong>for the respective producers and put additional strain on supply chains.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Energy policy in China<\/h3><p>The <strong>huge <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtai.de\/gtai-de\/trade\/wirtschaftsumfeld\/bericht-wirtschaftsumfeld\/china\/stromknappheit-in-china-verschaerft-globale-lieferengpaesse-723946\"><strong>demand for energy in China <\/strong><\/a>actually has an indirect impact on supply chains. China still relies 50% on coal-fired power. When this becomes scarce (e.g. due to trade disputes with Australia), electricity is rationed, which slows down industry in China and thus the production of important components.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>USA-China conflict<\/h3><p><strong>Trade difficulties between the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Handelskonflikt_zwischen_den_Vereinigten_Staaten_und_der_Volksrepublik_China\"><strong>USA and China <\/strong><\/a>can affect logistics and production worldwide.
